Happy September curly girls (and boys!), what a month it’s already been for us at CGM Club HQ! So far we’ve launched a new website, rebranded out packaging, AND started trialing new products so that we can expand our range! Phew!!
Being a member of CGM Club means that when it comes to finding the best products for your coils and waves, all the hard work has been done for you - there’s no need to trawl the supermarket shelves or scrutinise the packaging for ingredients, at CGM Club we’ve already done the legwork, and can confidently deliver you the very best hair care system that will see your curls flourish!!
This month we’ll be answering some of the most common (and often quite random!) questions we get asked when it comes to taking care of curly hair the CGM Club way!
CGM Club Q&A
Let’s start with products…
What Do I Need To Get Started?
This is the big question isn’t it? - and the answer used to be so overwhelming, with curly girls trialing product after product in an effort to find out what worked and what didn’t - which is incredibly time consuming - not to mention expensive! Even the cost of ‘budget’ products soon adds up if you take a trial and error approach.
At CGM Club we wanted to save other curlies from the frustrating and lengthy process of finding out how to make the best of their spirals by putting together everything you need in one handy kit!
Our beginner kits contain everything you need to get started, including co-wash, deep conditioner, and styling product - not to mention loads of other goodies!
So, what do you need to get started? - US!!
What Is A Cast?
A cast refers to the crunchiness of your curls when it has dried with product on it. You probably remember these ‘wet look’ curls from the 90s, normally the victims of too much hair mousse!! Oh how times have changed! Our Style It curl defining gel and our Casting Queen pomade are both designed to provide incredible definition and hold to your curls, forming a crunchy cast until your hair is dry and you are ready to SOTC!!
What Is SOTC?
Scrunch Out The Crunch! Once your hair is dry you don’t want to be walking around with crispy 1990’s hair (unless you do!), to make your newly defined curls soft again you need to SOTC. Some curlies like to do this with a cotton t-shirt, or a microfibre towel (you’ll find a great one on our website!), while others prefer to use their bare hands in a ‘scrunching’ or ‘clapping’ motion.
Our top tip for those who prefer to use their bare hands is to try rubbing a couple of drops of our featherlight Seal It oil into your palms before scrunching; it will help to break the cast as well as adding shine and locking in moisture.
Can I Sleep In My Cast?
Yes! It’s actually a great way of preserving your hair overnight before you SOTC in the morning. We would always recommend using a satin sleep cap to protect your hair as you sleep and minimise frizz. We’ve tried A LOT of accessories geared towards looking after your curls as you sleep that didn’t always deliver - and so we ended up developing our own! Head over to our website and take a look!
What Does High Or Low Porosity Mean?
Porous hair soaks up water quickly, but it also means that the cuticle is open and raised and therefore loses moisture just as quick. Some hair is naturally very porous, other hair has been made porous from bleaching or dying the hair, particularly over long periods of time. High porosity hair will probably benefit from more regular deep conditioning treatments and can probably handle thicker products without looking weighed down or greasy.
Low porosity hair is the opposite; because the cuticles are smooth and closed the hair doesn’t need as much moisture and you probably don’t need to use as much product as someone with more porous hair. Your hair will probably look a little shinier than high porosity hair, but it can also look greasy quickly.
How Often Should I Deep Condition?
Curly hair needs a lot more moisture than straight hair. This is because the natural oils produced by your scalp can make their way down the hair shaft as easily, and so curly hair is always thirsty hair! We recommend a weekly deep condition combining our It’s Rich moisturising balm with our Strength And Shine Leave-In Conditioner for a luxurious treat that your curls will thank you for!
