(Or… do they?)
Okay — I kind of tricked you with that title. Because the truth is, oils aren’t going to give your curls or waves definition on their own. That’s not what they do.
But let’s talk about what they can do. And how to use them so you don’t end up feeling like you dipped your head in a chip pan.
Oils: Not Good. Not Bad. Just Misunderstood.
Oils are one of those ingredients that people either slather on or completely avoid — and honestly, the answer is somewhere in the middle.
If you’re applying neat oil directly to your hair, think of it like washing a frying pan after cooking something greasy. You’ll need a proper degreaser (or in hair terms: a strong cleanser) to remove that oil build-up.
And that’s the issue — applying oils too heavily can lead to build-up, dullness, and, ironically, more frizz because you’ll need to over-wash to get rid of it.
So how do you use oils in a way that works for wavy + curly hair?
Here’s what I recommend at CGMC® (and how I use them myself):
1–3 drops of our Seal It oil over a styler like Casting Queen is a game-changer.
It helps soften any crunch from gel cast, adds shine, and won’t cause greasy build-up or require a “dish soap” cleanse to remove.
Light, intentional use = magic.
100ml of oil poured straight on your ends? Absolutely not.
Want to use oils for deeper hydration?
Mix them into your conditioner. Yep, really.
Emulsify (just a fancy word for blending) a few drops of oil into your conditioner before applying.
This way, you get the benefits — frizz control, hydration, softness — without weighing your hair down or leaving residue behind.
Leave it on for longer if your hair is super dry or feels brittle.
But make sure you’re doing this because your hair is dry, not just frizzy — sometimes frizz comes from imbalance, not dehydration. Ours is called Treat It.
The bottom line: When to Use Oils in Wavy + Curly Hair
-
✅ To banish frizz? Yes. Mixed with conditioner.
-
✅ To soften gel cast? Perfect. A few drops after styling = shine and softness.
-
❌ To define curls/waves? Not really. You’ll need a styler (like gel or cream) + technique for that.
-
❌ To soak your hair in 100ml of oil? Please no. That’s build-up city, with little reward.
Heavy oil use often ends in over-cleansing, which causes dryness… which leads to more frizz. See the cycle?
Oils can be brilliant — when used with care. They’re supporting players, not the main act. Shine? Yes. Sealing in moisture? Yes. Definition? Not on their own.
So if you’re asking:
“Which hair oils enhance curl definition for wavy hair?”
The answer is: they don’t — but they can support the products and techniques that do.
And if you want to try one that actually works in a curly routine, we’ve made ours light, silicone-free, and super versatile.
It's called Seal It — and it’s fab for frizz, shine, and smoothing over gel.
Stay Curly,
Heather x
