Learn moreWhy Your Curly Hair Needs a Detox Shampoo (And How It Can Transform Your Curls)
Have your curls been feeling a little "off" lately? Maybe they're looking flatter than usual, feeling heavy at the roots, or refusing to hold their definition no matter how carefully you style them. If that sounds familiar, your curls might not need more products, they might need a reset. At Curly Girl Method Club®, we often see curlies reaching for extra leave-ins, styling creams, or masks when their hair loses its bounce. But sometimes the real issue is something much simpler: buildup. That's exactly why we created our Detox Build-Up Shampoo, to give curls a fresh start when everyday life starts weighing them down. What Is Build-Up? Even if you're following the Curly Girl Method and using curl-friendly products, buildup can still happen. Over time, sweat, natural oils, product residue, and everyday pollutants can collect on your hair and scalp. Even water-soluble styling products can leave behind residue that co-washing alone may not fully remove. When this happens, curls can start to feel: Heavy and lifeless Flat at the roots Less defined Oily sooner than usual Slow to respond to styling products If you've ever thought, "Why aren't my curls behaving like they normally do?" buildup could be the reason. Why Curly Hair Needs a Detox Think of a detox shampoo as a reset button for your curls. Just as you occasionally deep clean your home, your curls benefit from a deeper cleanse every few washes. Removing buildup helps restore the light, bouncy feeling that makes curls look and feel their best. A good detox shampoo can help: Remove product residue Lift excess oil from the scalp Refresh heavy curls Improve curl definition Reduce wet frizz Help your styling products perform better When your hair isn't coated with buildup, moisture can penetrate more effectively and your styling routine can work the way it's supposed to. Signs Your Curls Are Ready for a Detox Not sure if your hair needs one? Here are some common signs: Your Roots Feel Oily Quickly If your scalp feels greasy sooner than usual, buildup may be sitting on the scalp and hair strands. Your Curls Feel Heavy Healthy curls should feel light and responsive. When buildup accumulates, curls can lose their natural bounce. Your Favourite Products Aren't Working If your usual products suddenly seem less effective, it may be because residue is preventing them from working their best. Your Hair Looks Dull Buildup can leave curls looking tired and lacking vibrancy. A detox wash can help bring them back to life. Meet Your Curl Reset: Detox Build-Up Shampoo Our Detox Build-Up Shampoo was created specifically for waves and curls that need a deeper cleanse without sacrificing moisture. Unlike harsh cleansers that can leave curls feeling stripped and dry, Detox uses sulphate-free cleansers to gently lift away sweat, oil, product residue, and pollution while helping preserve essential hydration. Powered By Aloe Vera + Argan Oil We chose Aloe Vera and Argan Oil because curls need balance. While Detox removes buildup, these ingredients help replenish lightweight hydration so your hair feels soft, clean, and bouncy after every deeper cleanse. What Results Can You Expect? After a detox wash, many curlies notice: Fresher-feeling curls More natural bounce Revived softness Reduced wet frizz Better styling results In other words, your curls can feel like themselves again. How Often Should You Use Detox Build-Up Shampoo? If you have your unique curl code from us, we recommend following the schedule outlined in your plan. Every curl journey is different, and your recommended detox frequency has been tailored specifically to your hair's needs. If you haven't received a personalised plan, we generally recommend using our Detox Build-Up Shampoo every 4–8 weeks to help remove product residue, refresh your scalp, and keep your curls looking their best. Give Your Curls the Fresh Start They Deserve If your curls feel heavy, flat, oily, or less defined than usual, it may be time to stop adding more products and start removing what's holding them back. Detox Build-Up Shampoo was created to gently lift away the weight of daily life, from sweat and oil to product residue and pollution, so your curls can feel light, clean, and bouncy again. Because sometimes the secret to better curls isn't adding more. It's starting fresh.
Learn moreWhy We Created Bounce Back: The Protein Treatment for Curls That Need Their Life Back
If there’s one thing we hear all the time, it’s this: “My curls just don’t bounce like they used to.” The definition disappears after one day. The volume falls flat. Wash day starts looking less exciting and more frustrating. And most people assume the answer is simple: “Add more moisture.” But what if your curls don’t actually need more moisture? What if they need strength? We created Bounce Back because not every curl problem is a moisture problem. Sometimes curls lose their shape because they're missing structure. The Problem We Kept Seeing For years, we watched curl after curl struggle with the same symptoms: Limp definition Soft but shapeless curls Waves that drop quickly Frizz that appears too soon Hair that feels “mushy” or over-moisturised The common response was always another deep conditioner, another mask, or another moisturising product. But for many curl types, that wasn’t solving the problem. In fact, sometimes it was making it worse. Healthy curls need balance. Too much protein can make hair feel dry. Too much moisture can make curls feel weak, stretched, and unable to hold their shape. When that balance tips too far toward moisture, curls often lose the structure they need to stay bouncy and defined. That’s where Bounce Back comes in. Why Protein Matters for Curly Hair Think of protein as the support system for your curls. It helps reinforce the hair strand and gives curls the strength they need to spring back into shape. Without enough protein, curls can become: Flat Lifeless Difficult to style Less defined Unable to hold their curl pattern Protein helps give curls resilience. It supports the structure of the hair so curls can maintain their natural shape for longer. That means better bounce, better definition, and more consistency between wash days. Why We Made Bounce Back Different We didn’t want another heavy treatment. We didn’t want something that coated the hair or left curls feeling stiff. We wanted a targeted treatment that focused on one thing: Giving curls the protein support they need when they need it. That’s why Bounce Back was created as a protein-only pre-wash treatment. It’s designed to help reinforce weakened curls before your normal wash routine, making it easy to fit into your existing curl care routine. The goal isn’t hard curls. The goal is healthy curls with strength, movement, and bounce. Signs Your Curls Might Need Protein Not sure if Bounce Back is right for you? Here are some common signs your hair may be asking for more protein: Your curls fall flat quickly You get great results on wash day, but by the next morning your definition has disappeared. Your hair feels overly soft Soft hair sounds great in theory, but when curls lose too much structure they often struggle to hold their shape. Your curls stretch instead of spring Healthy curls should bounce back. If they feel loose, limp, or stretched, protein may help restore balance. You deep condition often but still aren't getting results More moisture isn't always the answer. Sometimes curls need reinforcement, not hydration. What Makes Bounce Back a Curl Community Favourite Bounce Back has become one of the most-loved treatments in the CGMC® range because it targets a problem so many curlies experience but often struggle to identify. Users love it because it helps: Restore curl strength Improve curl definition Increase bounce Support longer-lasting results Bring life back to tired curls And because it's used as a treatment rather than an everyday product, it works alongside the rest of your curl routine without adding unnecessary weight or buildup. The Goal Was Never Perfect Curls When we created Bounce Back, we weren't chasing perfection. We were chasing healthier curls. Because healthy curls naturally have more shine, more bounce, more movement, and more definition. We wanted to create a product that helps curls feel supported, not overloaded. A product that reminds curls how to be curls again. And that's exactly why Bounce Back continues to be a staple in so many wash day routines. Ready to Bring Your Curls Back to Life? If your curls have been feeling flat, lifeless, or harder to define lately, they may be missing the structure that protein provides. Bounce Back was created to help restore that balance. Because sometimes the difference between limp curls and bouncy curls isn't more moisture. It's the strength to bounce back. Shop Bounce Back Protein Treatment Stronger curls. Better bounce. Longer-lasting definition.
Learn moreHow to Keep Your Curls Happy All Summer Long
Summer is great for sunshine, holidays, beach days, and spending more time outdoors — but for curls, it can also mean dryness, frizz, tangles, and loss of definition. Heat, humidity, UV exposure, chlorine, salt water, and even air conditioning can all affect the health of your curls. One day your hair feels soft and defined, and the next it suddenly feels dry, fluffy, and impossible to manage. The good news? Summer curl care doesn’t need to be complicated. With the right balance of moisture and frizz protection, your curls can stay soft, healthy, and beautifully defined all season long. And when it comes to keeping curls hydrated and protected during warmer weather, two products become true summer essentials: Tame Frizz Serum and Magic Mask Fast-Acting Deep Conditioner. Why Summer Can Be So Tough on Curls Curly hair naturally needs more moisture than straight hair because the natural oils from the scalp have a harder time travelling down the bends and curves of the hair strand. During summer, curls can lose moisture even faster due to: Sun exposure and UV rays Humidity and excess moisture in the air Chlorine and salt water Heat styling and diffusing More frequent washing Dry indoor air from fans and air conditioning This often leads to: Frizz and puffiness Dry or rough-feeling curls Loss of curl definition Tangling and breakage Hair feeling harder to manage That’s why summer curl care should focus on two key things: Replacing lost moisture Protecting curls from frizz and environmental stress The Product Every Summer Curl Routine Needs Tame Frizz Serum: Lightweight Frizz Protection Without the Crunch Humidity is one of the biggest challenges for curls during summer. When there’s extra moisture in the air, the hair cuticle can swell and cause frizz, puffiness, and loss of definition. That’s where Tame Frizz Serum comes in. Designed specifically for waves and curls, Tame helps smooth frizz while keeping curls soft, touchable, and lightweight. Instead of making hair stiff or greasy, it helps create smoother, more defined curls without weighing them down. It’s especially helpful during humid summer weather because it helps curls stay more controlled and manageable throughout the day. We love using Tame: Before diffusing To smooth halo frizz For curl refresh days Before heading outside in humid weather To add softness and shine without heaviness A small amount is enough to help curls feel smoother and more polished while still looking natural and bouncy. Why Deep Conditioning Matters More in Summer Even healthy curls can become dehydrated during warmer months. After long days in the sun, swimming, travelling, or simply being exposed to heat and humidity, curls often need extra hydration to stay soft and resilient. Magic Mask Fast-Acting Deep Conditioner is designed to deeply nourish curls without leaving them heavy or coated. Powered by Olive Oil, Pro-Vitamin B5 (Panthenol), and Vitamin E, it helps: Deeply hydrate dry curls Improve softness and shine Smooth frizz Make detangling easier Support healthier-feeling hair overall One of the biggest benefits during summer is how the low-pH formula helps smooth the hair cuticle after exposure to heat, humidity, and environmental stress. This helps curls hold onto moisture better and appear shinier, softer, and less frizzy. And because it works in as little as 10 minutes, it’s easy to fit into your routine even during busy summer days. Simple Summer Curl Tips That Actually Help 1. Prioritise moisture If curls are feeling frizzier than usual, they may simply need more hydration. Deep conditioning consistently can help prevent dryness before it becomes damage. 2. Avoid overloading curls with heavy products Summer humidity and heat often work better with lightweight moisture and frizz control rather than thick oils and butters. 3. Protect curls after swimming Chlorine and salt water can leave curls feeling dry and tangled. Rinsing hair and following up with a nourishing mask can help restore softness faster. 4. Refresh instead of overwashing Washing curls too often during summer can strip moisture. Refreshing with a lightweight frizz product can help bring curls back to life between wash days. 5. Focus on healthy curls, not perfect curls Curls naturally change with the weather. Instead of chasing perfect definition every day, focus on softness, hydration, and keeping curls manageable. Healthy Summer Curls Start With Hydration Summer should feel fun and carefree — and your curl routine can feel that way too. Keeping curls healthy during warmer weather doesn’t require dozens of products or complicated routines. With consistent moisture from Magic Mask and lightweight frizz protection from Tame, your curls can stay softer, smoother, and more defined all season long. Because the goal isn’t perfect curls. It’s healthy, hydrated curls that feel as good as they look.

Learn moreIs My Hair Even Wavy or Curly… or Is It Just Frizzy?
Be honest... have you ever stood in the mirror, grabbed a handful of your hair, and said —“Is this a curl? A wave? Or just one big cloud of chaos?” 😅 If you have, same. That question is literally why CGMC® exists. I used to think my hair was just frizzy, messy, unruly. Nothing more. Not curly. Not wavy. Just hard to deal with. But here’s what no one told me — and maybe no one’s told you either:Frizz is a strand of hair that's not hanging out with its mates. Not clumping. Not waving. Not ringleting.Just out there solo… trying its best, but not quite getting the group memo. Let’s unpack this… If your hair: Goes poof in the rain Never dries smooth without a straightener Looks like it wants to do something... but then doesn’t Gets big when you brush it Has random bends or loops in places Then your hair is not straight. It IS wavy or curly or inbetween wurly. Here’s what I’d tell you if you messaged me asking this: ➡️ Try co-washing.➡️ Use a leave-in that doesn’t weigh you down or coat your hair (ours only has what waves + curls like).➡️ Style on soaking wet hair.➡️ Don’t detangle when dry. Not sure where to start? That’s literally why I made the Quiz: What Will Work for My Waves + Curls? It’s free, it’s 60 seconds, and it’ll tell you what steps your hair needs — and what to skip. Or you can go all in and grab a Starter Kit. It’s got the products and tutorials that walk you through it all. Because if your hair’s secretly curly or wavy, it’s going to show up fast —Once you stop stripping it and start giving it the care it’s quietly been asking for. Frizz isn’t the enemy. It’s a clue. It means your hair’s trying — and it just needs a little help getting there. You're not mad for thinking your hair might be textured.I can't wait to seee where your journey takes you! If your hair is not straight it is wavy, curly, wurly, coily after all 😉Stay Curly, Heather x
Learn moreWhat Products Are Good for Wavy + Curly Hair?
Here’s the honest answer: it’s not really about products. It’s about ingredients. Because the truth is, one product could work brilliantly for one person and leave another with dry, frizzy, heavy hair — all because of what’s inside the bottle. So instead of asking, “Which product is best?”Ask, “What’s in it?”That’s what actually matters. At CGMC®, we learned this the long way — by going through it ourselves and listening to over 350,000 people with curls and waves. That’s why when I started CGMC®, I sold my flat to formulate a line that removed the real triggers. The Things Curls + Waves LOVE (according to 350k curlies): These are the ingredients that consistently help texture thrive: Aloe vera – soothing, hydrating, and calming for both scalp + frizz Olive oil (in the right formulation) – moisturising without heaviness Vitamin B5 (Panthenol) – a humectant that adds moisture and shine Anti-static agents – to smooth the hair and reduce frizz without buildup Antibacterial botanicals – for a cleaner, calmer scalp Emulsifiers that rinse clean – because clean hair = fresh curls Antioxidants like henna extract – helps results last past day one And these are each one product each, so if you do have a sensitivity to it, you'll know the culprit + move on. But just as important — actually, more important — is what your hair doesn’t like. What We Removed from Every CGMC® Product: These are the ingredients our community told us were causing frizz, buildup, or frustration: ❌ Silicones – cause buildup and block moisture ❌ Sulphates – drying cleansers that rough up your curl pattern ❌ Coconut oil – too heavy or stiffening for most ❌ Drying alcohols – steal moisture from your strands ❌ Protein overload – throws off the balance and leads to breakage ❌ Parabens – unnecessary preservatives ❌ Itchy “M” ingredients (like Methylisothiazolinone) – common allergy triggers We stripped all of this out so you don’t have to keep guessing. But Wait — How Do You Make Products for Everyone with Textured Hair? Great question. And the answer is:You don’t mix everything into one bottle. One-size-fits-all doesn’t work when you’ve got: Different curl patterns Different densities Different porosities Different individual strand thicknesses Different lifestyles + preferences So instead of chasing a “miracle product,” I created the 6-Step CGMC® System — a way to break everything down into simple, targeted steps so you can build a routine that works for your exact hair type. Here’s what that means: No protein in your daily products — so we can add it only when your hair actually needs it Cleansers, masks, and treatments kept separate — because too much of the wrong thing at the wrong time leads to limp, dry, or frizzy curls Step-by-step routines with tutorials — so you're not guessing, you're learning So What Products Are Good for Curly + Wavy Hair? Here’s what to look for:✅ Ingredients that hydrate + protect✅ Products that rinse clean✅ Labels that tell the truth — not just buzzwords they match the ingredients list.✅ Formulas that give you flexibility to adjust to your own hair's needs At CGMC®, we say: Say NO to nasties:No drying cleansers, no build-up, no stiff hair, no harmful chemicals. Say YES to what works:✓ UK-made✓ Vegan + cruelty-free✓ Curly Girl Method safe✓ Colour safe✓ Rinse-clean formulas✓ Tutorials that teach, not confuse Want help figuring out what your hair needs? Start by flipping the bottle.Look at the ingredients — not just the marketing line.If your hair hates something, write it down.Next time you shop, check for those same ingredients. If they’re in there? Likely a miss. If they’re not? You’ve got a better shot at success. Or… skip the confusion and take our Unique Curl Code™ — we’ll tell you exactly what to use and what to avoid based on your real curl type, porosity, and goals. That’s how you win at wave + curl care. Not by buying more stuff. But by buying smarter — and finally understanding what works for you.Stay Curly, Heather x
Learn moreHair Oils That Enhance Curl Definition for Wavy Hair
(Or… do they?) Okay — I kind of tricked you with that title. Because the truth is, oils aren’t going to give your curls or waves definition on their own. That’s not what they do. But let’s talk about what they can do. And how to use them so you don’t end up feeling like you dipped your head in a chip pan. Oils: Not Good. Not Bad. Just Misunderstood. Oils are one of those ingredients that people either slather on or completely avoid — and honestly, the answer is somewhere in the middle. If you’re applying neat oil directly to your hair, think of it like washing a frying pan after cooking something greasy. You’ll need a proper degreaser (or in hair terms: a strong cleanser) to remove that oil build-up. And that’s the issue — applying oils too heavily can lead to build-up, dullness, and, ironically, more frizz because you’ll need to over-wash to get rid of it. So how do you use oils in a way that works for wavy + curly hair? Here’s what I recommend at CGMC® (and how I use them myself): 1–3 drops of our Seal It oil over a styler like Casting Queen is a game-changer.It helps soften any crunch from gel cast, adds shine, and won’t cause greasy build-up or require a “dish soap” cleanse to remove.Light, intentional use = magic.100ml of oil poured straight on your ends? Absolutely not. Want to use oils for deeper hydration? Mix them into your conditioner. Yep, really.Emulsify (just a fancy word for blending) a few drops of oil into your conditioner before applying. This way, you get the benefits — frizz control, hydration, softness — without weighing your hair down or leaving residue behind. Leave it on for longer if your hair is super dry or feels brittle. But make sure you’re doing this because your hair is dry, not just frizzy — sometimes frizz comes from imbalance, not dehydration. Ours is called Treat It. The bottom line: When to Use Oils in Wavy + Curly Hair ✅ To banish frizz? Yes. Mixed with conditioner. ✅ To soften gel cast? Perfect. A few drops after styling = shine and softness. ❌ To define curls/waves? Not really. You’ll need a styler (like gel or cream) + technique for that. ❌ To soak your hair in 100ml of oil? Please no. That’s build-up city, with little reward. Heavy oil use often ends in over-cleansing, which causes dryness… which leads to more frizz. See the cycle? Oils can be brilliant — when used with care. They’re supporting players, not the main act. Shine? Yes. Sealing in moisture? Yes. Definition? Not on their own. So if you’re asking:“Which hair oils enhance curl definition for wavy hair?”The answer is: they don’t — but they can support the products and techniques that do. And if you want to try one that actually works in a curly routine, we’ve made ours light, silicone-free, and super versatile. It's called Seal It — and it’s fab for frizz, shine, and smoothing over gel.Stay Curly, Heather x
