Why Is My Curly Hair Still Frizzy?

Why Is My Curly Hair Still Frizzy?

The CGMC Guide to Longer-Lasting, Defined Curls

If there’s one question I hear again and again from the curly girl community, it’s this:

“Why is my curly hair still frizzy when I’m doing everything right?”

And honestly?

I get it.

You’ve bought the products. You’ve watched the tutorials. You’ve scrunched, plopped, diffused, refreshed and probably tried approximately 47 different curly hair hacks.

Yet somehow, the halo of frizz is still there.

Before you panic and buy another five products, let’s take a step back.

Because frizz usually isn't about needing more products.

It’s about understanding what your hair needs and getting your routine right.

That’s exactly why I created CGMC. I wanted to take away some of the confusion and trial-and-error around caring for waves and curls and give you a simple system you can actually follow.

And yes, your curls are allowed to have a little frizz.

They're real hair, not a computer-generated image.

But if your curls are regularly dry, fluffy, undefined or losing their shape shortly after washday, that's when I'd start looking at your routine.

So let's work it out together.

Why is my curly hair so frizzy?

There isn't one single answer.

Frizz can be influenced by a combination of things, including:

  • Dryness

  • Humidity

  • Product build-up

  • Too much touching or manipulating

  • Not enough styling hold

  • Applying products incorrectly

  • Rough drying

  • Sleeping without protecting your curls

  • Products that don't suit your hair

  • Changing too many things at once

And sometimes?

Your curls simply need a little more support.

This is why I don't want you changing your entire bathroom shelf every time you see frizz.

Look at the whole routine first.

Your curls don't need another miracle product

This is something I really want you to remember.

We're constantly being told that there's one product that's going to solve everything.

One cream.

One oil.

One gel.

One anti-frizz serum.

But your curls don't work like that.

Every part of your routine has a job.

At CGMC, the current system is built around a 6-step cycle:

1. Cleanse → 2. Condition → 3. Style → 4. De-Frizz → 5. Refresh → 6. Treat

The aim is to make your routine easier to understand while still allowing you to adapt it to your own hair. CGMC currently describes its products as being made for waves and curls and shaped by feedback from hundreds of thousands of people in the community.

Because your hair isn't the same as mine.

And your curls aren't necessarily the same as your best friend's curls either.

So let's break it down.

Step 1: Cleanse your curls properly

This is where lots of curlies get nervous.

“But won't cleansing make my hair dry?”

Not if you're using the right cleanser for your hair.

CGMC currently has both Cleansing Co-Wash and Cleansing Co-Wash Plus+. The Co-Wash is positioned for dry, frizzy or fluffy curls and waves, while Co-Wash Plus+ is aimed at finer hair, easily weighed-down curls and oily roots.

And here's something that can make a surprisingly big difference:

Add water.

Apply your cleanser to soaking-wet hair, massage your scalp and roots, add more water for slip, then detangle and rinse.

It isn't always about adding more product.

Sometimes your curls just need more water.

Step 2: Condition — and keep those curls soaking wet

Once your hair is clean, it's time to give your curls the moisture and slip they need.

CGMC's Leave-In Conditioner is designed for waves and curls needing moisture without weight.

Apply it to soaking-wet hair and distribute it evenly.

Why?

Because when your curls are properly wet, your products can distribute through the hair more easily and encourage those lovely curl clumps.

And curl clumping is your friend when you're trying to reduce that fluffy, separated look.

Think about it:

Separated strands = fluffy.

Grouped strands = defined curls.

Step 3: Style for definition and hold

Here's another curly-hair question I hear all the time:

“Why are my curls defined when they're wet but frizzy when they're dry?”

Usually, something is happening between those two stages.

Your curls can look beautifully grouped together while they're soaking wet, but once the water disappears, those curl clumps need enough support to stay together.

That's where your styler comes in.

CGMC currently has Style It Styling Gel and Casting Queen Styling Cream as Step 3 styling options. Style It is positioned for soft hold and lasting definition, while Casting Queen is the stronger-hold option, designed to hold shape against humidity and damp.

Apply your chosen styler to soaking-wet hair and scrunch.

And don't automatically assume that using less product will give you better curls.

You don't need to drown your hair.

But if you're using so little that your curls have no support once they dry, frizz can creep back in.

Step 4: De-Frizz — meet Tame

Now we're getting to the part everyone wants to know about.

“How do I actually tame curly hair frizz?”

This is where Tame Frizz Serum comes in.

Tame is currently CGMC's Step 4 De-Frizz product. CGMC also positions it as something you can use as Step 5 Refresh between washes.

On washday, CGMC recommends applying 1 pump over soaking-wet hair after Steps 1–3.

And you don't need to cover your entire head in serum.

Think strategically.

Halo frizz?

Target it.

Flyaways?

Target them.

Outer layer looking fluffy?

Smooth it.

Tame's current formula is fragrance-free and protein-free, and CGMC says it is designed for frizz control in changing weather conditions, including humidity and damp.

So rather than piling product onto your hair, think about where you actually need it.

Step 5: Dry without creating more frizz

You've done all that lovely work.

Now don't undo it while drying!

One of the techniques in the original CGMC routine is plopping.

Plopping allows your curls to sit supported while they're wrapped rather than hanging down and being disturbed.

CGMC's range currently includes its Hair Towel | Wrap | Plop specifically within the Step 4 frizz and drying collection.

After plopping, you can air dry or diffuse.

And please, please try not to keep touching your curls while they're drying.

I know.

It's hard.

You see one curl doing something strange and your hand automatically goes in.

But every time you touch, separate or rearrange those forming curl clumps, you can create more disruption.

Let your curls set.

And then there's humidity...

Ah, humidity.

Our curly-haired nemesis.

Your hair can behave beautifully one day and completely differently the next.

But that doesn't mean you need to hide indoors every time the weather changes.

It means your routine needs enough moisture, definition, hold and frizz control to support your curls.

This is one reason CGMC positions both Tame and Casting Queen around humidity and damp conditions. Tame is the dedicated Step 4 frizz-control product, while Casting Queen is designed to provide strong hold that stands up to humidity and damp.

So rather than trying to fight the weather with ten different products, start with your routine.

Your curl routine doesn't finish when your hair dries

This one gets forgotten all the time.

What happens overnight matters too.

Friction while you're sleeping can disturb your curl pattern and leave you waking up with more fluff than you had the night before.

CGMC currently offers several options for nighttime protection, including its Buff, Satin Pillowcase and Satin Sleep Cap.

You don't need all three.

Find the option that works for you.

The goal is simple:

Protect today's curls so tomorrow's hair has less work to do.

How do I refresh curly hair without making it frizzy?

This is another one I hear all the time.

You wake up.

Your curls are still there...

…but they're looking a little tired.

Don't immediately start another washday.

Refresh.

CGMC currently positions Tame as both Step 4 De-Frizz and Step 5 Refresh, with the product designed to be reapplied to dry or damp hair between washes.

For a quick refresh, you may only need:

A little water + a little product + a little patience.

Not another full washday.

Could your products actually be contributing to the problem?

This is worth looking at.

Sometimes we're spending hours trying to fix a problem while continuing to use products that aren't working for our hair.

CGMC's current 7× Promise focuses on formulas free from seven ingredients the brand says its community has found problematic for waves and curls:

  • Sulphates

  • Silicones

  • Drying alcohols

  • Coconut oil

  • Waxes

  • Itchy “M” ingredients

  • Parabens

CGMC also highlights avoiding protein overload as part of its approach.

But here's the important bit:

Hair is individual.

If you're dealing with constant build-up, dryness, stiffness or frizz, it's worth looking at what you're putting on your hair, not just how much.

What if I'm already using an anti-frizz product?

This is where I want you to stop expecting one product to do the job of your entire routine.

Tame has a job.

Your cleanser has a job.

Your conditioner has a job.

Your styler has a job.

Your nighttime protection has a job.

Your treatments have a job.

Think of your curls like a little team.

Every step has a job.

When those steps work together, your routine becomes much easier to understand.

Detox Build-Up Shampoo when you have build-up, oily roots or heavy, lifeless curls and waves. CGMC currently positions this as Step 6 and describes it as a sulphate-free deep-cleansing treatment.

Bounce Back when your hair needs the protein treatment that forms part of the CGMC treatment range.

And the important part?

You don't need to do everything, every wash.

That's the whole point of having a system.

So... how do I finally stop my curly hair from frizzing?

Start by stopping the cycle of panic-buying products every time your curls misbehave.

Instead, ask yourself:

What is my hair actually telling me?

Is it dry?

Is there build-up?

Are my curls lacking hold?

Am I disturbing them while they're drying?

Am I protecting them overnight?

Am I refreshing them properly?

Am I using products that work with my hair rather than against it?

Once you start asking those questions, curly hair care becomes much less mysterious.

And that's exactly what I wanted CGMC to do.

Take curly hair care from:

“What on earth am I supposed to do?”

to:

“I know exactly what to do.”

Because you shouldn't need a bathroom full of products and a degree in curly hair to enjoy your natural texture.

You need a routine that makes sense for your hair.

Your curls aren't the problem.

The guesswork is.

And once you have a routine that works for you?

That's when the good curl days start becoming the everyday curl days.
